Description

French Onion Meatballs combine the rich flavors of French onion soup with juicy meatballs for a savory dish.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  3. Shape into 1-inch meatballs and place on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through.
  5. While meatballs bake, melt butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  6. Add onions and sugar, cook until caramelized (about 15 minutes).
  7. Pour in beef broth, simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Place meatballs in a baking dish, top with caramelized onions and Gruyère.
  9. Broil for 3 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated Parmesan for better flavor.
  • Caramelize onions slowly for best results.
  • Substitute Gruyère with Swiss cheese if needed.
